If so, stop now! Seriously, stop! It's not about keeping with tradition or performing a religious act. The Lent season is about change. Transformation. Metamorphosis. It's about becoming more in-tune with God and His heart towards you. This 40-day journey is about clearing the air. Getting quiet. Simplifying. Detoxing the mind, body and spirit.
Maybe you "gave up" something or maybe you added something to your life during this Lent season. Great! But what's more important is the motivation behind your decision. That's the million dollar question. The right thing done with wrong motives isn't right at all. So before reading any further, stop and do a self check. If you are participating in this season out of obligation or duty, stop! That's not the point. The point is joy. The point is heart change. The point is transformation from the inside to out. It's not about religion, but RELATIONSHIP.
Did you know for $38/month, you can give hope to a child in poverty? You can provide a child with food, education, health care and vocational training. We spend $38 easy on a weekend dinner out or on a new blouse at the mall. But in another country like Burkina Faso in northwest Africa, $38 is a whole lot of money and can change the trajectory of a young person's life.
Samiratou lives in Burkina Faso with her mom. Her time is spent running errands, cleaning and sometimes going to school. Although she lives in poverty, thanks to the Compassion International sponsorship program, Samiratou is a part of a local child development center in her village. Here she learns basic hygiene; she eats a hearty, nutritious meal; she receives help with her school work; she enjoys group activities like soccer; and she also learns about God.
The goal of the child development center isn't simply to give Samiratou a hand out, but to give her a hand up. The goal is to pass on hope and break the cycle of poverty she's grown up in. I want to see "Samiratou have the freedom to learn, grow, play and dream about a future free from poverty." With YOUR help we can see this dream realized not just for Samiratou, but for millions of other children as well.
Will you take the Compassion Challenge this Lent season? Before you do, count the costs. Check your heart. Check your motivation. Don't do it out of obligation, rather do it out of love. Do it out of a desire to change a young person's life.
You and I can be the change we wish to see in the world.
