Well my check engine light has appeared. That little light on the left of my dash came on a few weeks ago and yes, I haven't taken it in yet. I've been busy with every day life--the holidays, new year, new job, grocery shopping, cleaning…busy like everyone else! So I've ignored the light, but when I saw it today it reminded me about Life and the importance of having "check engine lights" in all areas of our lives.
Without these little lights to tell us when something's up, we could end up on the side of the road with no way to get home. Then suddenly we HAVE to make time to figure it out, but sometimes it's too late. If we drive our car ignoring the check engine light, sooner or later it will break down. It will go until it can't go anymore, but then it might be too late. Our uncooperative attitudes could cause permanent damage to the vehicle.
Same goes for Life: we need check engine lights to tell us what's up. We need check engine lights in our jobs, marriages, relationships and for our physical and spiritual wellbeing. We need barometers set up to tell us when something is askew--when all is not well under the hood.
Sometimes these "lights" come in the form of people who aren't afraid to tell us what we need to hear. Sometimes these "lights" are performance reviews to tell us if we are actually performing up to snuff. And sometimes these "lights" are physical symptoms. Our bodies are very smart and are the BEST indicators to tell us when we are pushing too hard, stressed-out, fearful or scared. Listen to your body!
Pay attention. Check engine lights are there for a reason. If you wait till you breakdown--until your marriage falls apart or you are on medication for diabetes and high blood pressure or you lose your job--it's too late! You can't go back and pay attention to those warning signs. Do it now! Do it now! Do it now!
What check engines lights do you have in your life? Do you have "lights" in place for accountability to tell you when something is off? Whatever you do, don't be like me and ignore your check engine light for a few weeks. Rather jump on it as soon as it comes on! It's your chance--your opportunity to fix it before it's…
