Goals inspire. Goals motivate. Goals invigorate.
Goals give us something to strive for. Something to look forward to.
It's like a mountain. You start at the bottom--base camp and you work your way up one step at a time.
Like a marathon--26.2 miles. You start at 0 wondering how you are going to make it the full 26.2.
Yet as the Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu so accurately said:
A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.
How true those words are. Anything worth achieving involves risk. It's scary. It's daunting. It resembles Mt. Everest at first. You wonder how you will ever get to the top. Yet something in you screams: TRY! GO FOR IT! JUST DO IT! TAKE THE FIRST STEP, THEN ANOTHER, THEN ANOTHER, THEN ANOTHER.
Don't think about the whole 26.2 miles. Just take the NEXT step. Before you realize it, you will be halfway up the mountain looking down and saying: wow, look how far I've come.
And then you will look up and think: gosh, I still have a long way to go. BUT at least you are journeying! At least you are climbing. You are going for it.
This is me right now. As I get ready to take a leave of absence from my job next week and dive into a new venture, I feel a mix of emotions. Part of me wonders: Who do I think I am for thinking I could accomplish this? Who am I fooling? Do I really have what it takes? But the other side of me is confident. Poised. Ready to go for it.
I know my life experiences and the challenges I've overcome have been preparing me for this next step. I don't know the final outcome, but I'm going to give it my best shot. I'm going for it!
Although part of me is nervous and a bit scared, I have had an unbelievable amount of support from close friends, family and mentors. Not many people know about this "mountain" I'm getting ready to climb, but those I have confided in have given me moral support and even financial assistance to help me achieve my dream.
I'm re-energized. I love doing something that is bigger than me. It's like David vs. Goliath. When I look at the odds I'm up against, it's scary. But when I look back on God's hand in my life and His guiding power to get me to where I am today, I feel like there is nothing I can't handle. He didn't bring me this far to take me back again.
He created us ordinary, yet when we surrender our lives to Him, He adds that little EXTRA onto ordinary. He turns impossible into I'M POSSIBLE.
So take a look at your own life: are you settling for less than the best? Are you living at base camp scared to tackle the mountain?
You may not know how you are going to climb it, but I guarantee you: you know enough to do the next right thing. That's all you have to do today--take a step in the right direction. And it's usually the first step that's the hardest. But once you take that first step and commit, it becomes easier and you will start to embrace the challenge of the climb.
I have a goal and I have an action plan to go with it. I'm setting myself up to succeed regardless of the outcome.
What about you? What mountain are you climbing?
Remember: the bigger the mountain, the longer the climb, but the view is so much better at the top! It's worth the effort!
