On some days the words flow so easily. I feel like a basketball player making every shot she takes--like I'm in my sweet spot or zone. But other days the words seem to get in a traffic jam between my heart, head and typing hands. They just don't come out as easily. You know those days that the words stumble out of your mouth versus flow in coherent, eloquent sentences? That's what I'm talking about.
Furthermore, as of now, I'm not getting paid to write. I know you might be surprised (chuckle), but no, I'm not a full-time writer YET. I feel like a renegade. I write in the cover of darkness when I can carve out some time, energy and space to do it in-between juggling several part-time jobs. And it's hard work to find that time, but I've found writing makes me a better person and that's why I make it a priority even though I don't make any money at it YET.
Many people view their work as a means to an end. They work to get money, period. Their work doesn't have any meaning beyond helping them pay their bills, give them decent health insurance and offer a matching 401k plan. They would leave their jobs in a heartbeat if the paychecks stopped coming in. Their job satisfies a need, but it doesn't satisfy their soul. Deep down they know there is more. There is more to life than working 8 to 5 for a company they despise.
What would I do even if I didn't get paid to do it? Cook? Coach a little league team? Teach ESL classes? Babysit? Walk dogs? Be a librarian?….
And am I saying, pick up, leave your job and jump into your passion? No. We all have needs--food, shelter, clothing, transportation….But you can still work to earn money and pay the bills while also investigating your passions. If you don't start now, when will you start? When you're retired? That might be too late. Start exploring NOW!!!
You, yes YOU, are special and have a unique set of talents and passions that the world desperately needs. So start NOW inching towards your calling. Read some books about it. Do some soul searching and praying. Be like me and just start exercising that "muscle" daily. You never know when a door of opportunity may open up for you to finally take that leap to where your passion also becomes your job. (Don't think this is easy for me to write--I'm preaching to myself here too!!!!)
Note: living a passionate, authentic life is NOT for the faint of heart. Seriously consider this before stepping out into your calling.
