We need more women in politics.
We need more women CEOs.
We need more women leaders.
Yes, women have come a long way in the last 50 years, but we still have a long way to go.
As I grow, mature and develop, I realize that strong, confident women are a rare breed indeed. I see too many women selling out and settling, shelving their dreams, getting married because it's convenient and safe. Their insecurity is filled and thus they are happy. But it usually isn't a deep or long-lasting happiness or sense of security. Some of those that settle early seem to regret the years they missed growing into themselves and pursuing their passions.
Think about it: your twenties is a pivotal time. You are growing, finding yourself, your passions, your purpose, your mission. And much of this continues on into your 30s (and really our whole lives!). I am not saying that anyone that gets married young has settled or sold themselves short. But I am pleading that women think twice before diving into a relationship and/or marriage just for the sense of security.
Raising strong, confident women starts in the home at a young age. We, as a society, tend to raise girls to assume they will one day get married. Comments like: and one day when you have kids and you are married... Comments that come from parents, relatives and other adults plant seeds into a young girl's mind that of course you are supposed to get married when you get older.
But what if marriage isn't in her deck of cards? What then? Is she less of a woman than her peers that get married? Does it mean she didn't live up to societal expectations?
These young girls expect to get married and grow up looking for their MRS degree. They start doing stupid things to attract the opposite sex. I tell girls: if you do stupid things to attract boys, you are going to attract stupid boys.
These girls need to be told they are strong. Confident. Unique. Special. One of a kind. Here at this junction in time for a reason and purpose. We need girls with dreams. We need girls pursuing their passions with zeal and excellence.
Women are the backbone of any society. An old African Proverb goes:
Women are beacons of light yet so many are snuffed out. Potential goes unrealized. Talent dies unused. Strengths become weak because they aren't exercised.
Girls need mentors and adults in their lives who say, YES YOU CAN! I BELIEVE IN YOU! GO FOR IT! Just because it hasn't been done before, doesn't mean it can't be done!
Invest in a girl's life. Plant a seed. Water a seed. Help that flower blossom to give fragrance to the world.
Let's raise strong, confident women to lead in society
