The news you hate to hear, yet it's become more routine since your daughter joined the military 10 years ago. You've received phone calls like this before and every time your heart sinks.
Why God, why? Why the war? Why the killing? Why does a young person's life have to be taken so soon?
Sadly news like this is not extremely rare in my family. But no matter how many phone calls like this we receive, it's still very painful and hurts to the core. Lindsey has lost several friends over the years. She's attended more funerals in her 28 years of living than most people will ever attend in their lifetime. She's had to deal with death and stare it in the face multiple times.
And the crazy thing about it is, Lindsey and her friends signed up for this voluntarily. They CHOOSE to fight for us. To defend our country. To be a part of the armed services. It's because of them, their sacrifices and humility, that you and I get to live the lives we live.
Take a moment. Stop. Pause. Reflect. If you think you're having a bad day or crappy holiday season, think again. There is a mom that received the worst phone call of her life today. There's a wife who is now a widow. There's a sister without a brother. An uncle without a nephew. A friend without friend.
As the Great Book says, "mourn with those who mourn" and "comfort the broken hearted." Find someone to show some extra special love to this weekend. And remember, Life is truly a GIFT from Above. YOU are blessed.
