Look at the caterpillar, for instance. A hairy, crawly creature that crawls from twig to twig hoping it doesn't get eaten or worse yet, picked up by an inquisitive kindergartener (LOL!).
But after awhile of being a caterpillar, comes the cocoon. The season where the caterpillar hibernates. She retreats and withdrawals from her normal way of life. She leaves her friends and environment to hunker down in the nest of the cocoon.
Some of her friends don't understand why. They don't get why she has to go there. "Why can't life just go on as it always has?" they think. "Why does it have to be this way." Some even try and force her out of the cocoon. They think she must be unhappy in there. "Who could be happy all cooped up and isolated like that?"
When her friends try and force her out. When her family members try and relieve her of the pain, discomfort and uncertainty of the cocoon season, she pushes back. She says NO! I have to go through this. It won't last forever, but for now, I MUST be in the cocoon. I'm growing my wings. You'll see….
I was a caterpillar and now I'm in the cocoon -- a season of getting quiet, taking a step away from all of the activity and busy-ness, growing, maturing, changing -- transforming into a butterfly. Although some people don't understand it, I must go through the cocoon season in order to get to the other side.
So join me -- if you're in the cocoon right now, JUST BE. If you've been through the cocoon, offer some words of hope and encouragement to someone going through it. And if you've never gone through the cocoon, ask yourself why. Are you scared of leaving your life as a caterpillar for the unknown? Giving up what you know for something different? -- Be honest with yourself. Not all caterpillars go through the cocoon, but ALL butterflies do. If you want to fly, you must go through the cocoon.
Let the season run its course and when it's time, emerge with wings spread wide, colorful and beautiful, one-of-a-kind, taking flight, seeing sites you never imagined, going places that were just dreams before.
You were created to soar. So SOAR!
