Feeling maxed out?
Feeling disenchanted with your life?
Feeling like a rat in a rat race?
Or perhaps you feel like your life is on repeat. Maybe you feel like you're the star in a never ending Groundhog Day movie, but it's not a movie, it's your life.
Do your days look pretty much the same? Are the only "big" differences day to day choices like what tie to wear OR to get a latte instead of an espresso OR to take the tollway or freeway?
Do you find yourself living for those precious vacation days or the "holy hour" of 5pm on Friday when you can leave the office and not return until 8am Monday morning?
What are you doing?
What are you living for?
So many people in our culture are walking dead beats. Sure they might have a beating heart, but they stopped LIVING years ago. They are on automatic, cruise control. Day to day life looks the same. Birthdays come and go without much change in the middle. For a myriad of reasons, they stopped dreaming, stopped hoping. They exchanged their upbeat, optimistic outlooks for bland, pessimistic attitudes. They are the people that believe "if something bad will happen, it will happen to me."
This doesn't sound like much of a life at all. In fact, it sounds like hell, if you ask me. No purpose. No goals. No dreams to write home about. It's a rat on the treadmill of life. This is a trap and many, many, MANY Americans are in it. The sad thing is, they don't even realize it.
Please take 9 minutes and watch this video. See if you resonate with anything in it.
The point is that petty, frustrating crap like this is exactly where the work of choosing is gonna come in. Because the traffic jams and crowded aisles and long checkout lines give me time to think, and if I don't make a conscious decision about how to think and what to pay attention to, I'm gonna be pissed and miserable every time I have to shop.
But as the speaker says, you don't have to live in this camp! You can exchange this mindset for a different one--a more noble one.
Yes, "it's hard. It takes will and effort, and if you are like me, some days you won't be able to do it, or you just flat out won't want to...But most days, if you're aware enough to give yourself a choice, you can choose to look differently at" [your life and circumstances].
"If you really learn how to pay attention, then you will know there are other options. It will actually be within your power to experience a crowded, hot, slow, consumer-hell type situation as not only meaningful, but sacred, on fire with the same force that made the stars: love, fellowship, the mystical oneness of all things deep down."
Wow! How true is that?
There is power in the simple, yet profound acts of being mindful and aware. Don't get on the treadmill. If you're on it, get off! Press stop! Walk away. Refuse to be sucked in the trap. Wake up! Live with mindfulness and intention. Dust off those dream journals. Set a coffee date with an old friend and rehash some of those life goals you talked about years ago.
As the speaker in the video says, "the capital-T Truth is about life before death." Let's direct our attention to living fully here and now becoming ALL that God created us to be, instead of wasting away our existence living thoughtless, selfish lives.
Be aware! Be mindful! ~ Remember, this is YOUR life. Live it!
