But seriously, I love this time of year. (Did you know Natalie means Christmas child? I was born for this season!) I just don't like how fast it flies by. We have to make an assertive effort--a conscious effort to stop, breathe and drink in the fresh air. Yes, it's hard especially when you're standing in line at the store behind a lady with 2 carts full of toys!!! It's hard to find things to be grateful for in that moment when all you can think about is the incompetent store staff running this circus called Target or Wal-Mart!
This black hole I refer to is a big, bottomless pit. It has sloping sides and quick sand on the fringes. It's hard to not get sucked in it. Sometimes we kid ourselves and say, "oh I'm just gonna peer in the hole," but then it's too late. We find ourselves swept up in the current of commercialization and playing the game "Keeping Up With Your Neighbors!" (Ever played that one!)
The funny thing about that game is that it never ends. It's like Monopoly on steroids. It's long and arduous. Sometimes one player has all the cash and then 3 hours later, the tide has turned and a different player holds the keys to the bank. Round and round we go! No one ever wins. There's always another Boardwalk and Park Place to buy.
How do we slow down? How do we NOT get sucked in to this big, black hole?
Friends, it requires a return to the SIMPLE. It's not fancy and I don't have a fancy formula to do it. It really is SIMPLE. Return to the SIMPLE.
Return to the song - the Christmas song that brings back memories of years gone by and makes you cry.
Return to the movie - the one that only comes on during this time of year. Make time to sit and watch it!
Return to the loved one - the person that warms your heart. The family member you haven't seen in awhile.
Return to the fire - ahhh the warmth of a fireplace on a cold day. It can warm the mind, body and spirit.
So what to do? Stop. Breathe. Make a point to return to the SIMPLE today!
