Some say good is the biggest enemy of great. And I agree. Too often we occupy ourselves with lots of small good things. We work and work and work, checking off the to-do list, but go to bed feeling like we didn't do the big, important things we wanted to do.
This doesn't mean the great things have to be big and grandiose. Many times the great things are the small things like making cookies with your kids, taking time out to enjoy a cup of coffee on the porch, reading a chapter in a book, writing a note to a friend, calling that person you've been thinking about... Simple things that have great significance.
Great things are the things that re-charge us. They bring life. They rejuvenate life. They help us. They help us help others. The great things are when we are being a blessing to someone else. It's not loading the dishwasher, returning those emails in your inbox, running those errands, dropping off the dry cleaning...
We run around like chickens with our heads cut off doing all those little things. They aren't bad things. They are good to do and we need to do them. BUT we need to be mindful how much time we are spending on them and if all of those little good things are robbing us of the GREAT, we need to re-prioritize and do a self-check.
good < GREAT
Don't let your to-do list rob you of what's really important--sit back. Sip some tea. Read a book to a child. Watch the sunset. Pray. Listen. Be versus do.
You only have one life and it will soon be past. Don't just fill it with good. Do the great! Spend your time and energy where it matters!
