As I ran towards the stop sign this morning, the sun was directly behind me and my shadow was always a step in front of me. Then I turned around, faced the sun and ran back. This time I couldn't see my shadow. So what's the point, you might ask.
So when we run from God and try to do things on our own and make sense of our mistakes, successes, failures...in essence try and make sense of our past on our own, we are never going to "get it"--we will never be able to out run or overtake our past. Our shadow (past) will always be there looming over us and in front of us. We can't get away from it.
BUT if we turn around, face God and run towards Him (the sun), suddenly our shadows disappears in front of us. They no longer loom over us. We can run free--we can run with abandon. Our shadows (past) are behind us where they belong.
If you hold onto your past, it will hold onto you.
Let go and let God make it into something beautiful.
He specialzies in making beautiful mosaics out of broken pieces.
And when you turn around and run towards the sun, guess what? You will become more life-giving and caring, more compassionate and loving. You will live more in the moment instead of in the past.
Here are some nuggets to chew on:
- Forgetting the past and looking forward to what lies ahead, I press on to what lies ahead... (Philippians 3:13-14)
- Forget the former things, do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a NEW thing! (Isaiah 43:18-19)
- The future glory...will be greater than its past glory... (Haggai 2:9)
Turn around and run towards God! And suddenly your past will no longer define you.
